II ECPD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
CONTROVERSIES IN INFERTILITY
AND PERINATOLOGY
(Vrdnik, Ethno Complex Vrdnička kula, 16 – 17 June 2018)
Symposium Controversies in Infertility and Perinatology represents a new, original format of a continuous education with particular, specific aims and methodology, now traditionally held in Ethno village Vrdnička kula every June. Educational activites of this Symposium begin with a broad introduction for a wider audience of the basics of reproductive medicine and reproductive health, focusing on highly specialized topics in which speakers and participants face most delicate controversies in their everyday clinical practice in the field of infertility and perinatology.
Biomedically assisted fertilization (BAF), still widely recognized by the term In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been introduced into clinical practice nearly four decades ago as a turning point in tackling the problem of infertility. After humble beginnings, in terms of success of in vitro fertilization itself, a number of multidisciplinary innovations have led to a significant improvement in the success of the implementation of these procedures ‒ by now, more than six million babies are born with the help of the procedure of artificial insemination in the world, resulting in a fact that in some countries the percentage of children born after IVF procedures exceeds 5%. Wide introduction of the procedure of artificial insemination, both in state and private health institutions, equally financed by the Republic Health Insurance Fund, open issues concerning other related areas of Perinatology and the problems that can be solved in the field of multiple pregnancies, with all the risks involved.
This points out the need for the new branch of medicine ‒ perinatal psychiatry ‒ and all the challenges it may concern: reproductive rights of women, men and children, motivation for motherhood and fatherhood, issues of antenatal assessment of pregnant women, partnership and pregnancy, with special emphasis on the other side of perinatal challenges, pointing out to the need for a multidisciplinary approach for gynecologists, psychologists and psychiatrists.
Ethical and legal dilemmas concerning abortions, especially actualized with the implementation of Zoja Law, a broad topic with many dilemmas, legal issues and opposing opinions. Particularly noteworthy is the influence and attitude of prospective parents, concerning the decision of the council of doctors, regarding feticide and indication for abortion after the 20th gestation week, with a special emphasis on the legal framework. Finally, special attention is paid to the rights of the unborn child and the role of the profession and legislation when it comes to this particular issue.
This symposium aims to, with the help of competent expert lectures in these areas in our country and the region, with the active engagement of all participants, process the key current clinical dilemmas and controversies in male infertility and perinatology, as well as to evaluate the latest scientific knowledge with postulates based on medicine and followed with clinical evidence, therefore arriving to a consensus for the application of the aforementioned clinical intervention in routine clinical practice.
The methodology includes the Symposium theoretical lectures and demonstration of clinical skill in the form of three panel discussions divided in three sessions, representing logical clinical units, each of them individually processing one of major controversial issue in the latest achievements of reproductive medicine, in vitro fertilization, perinatology and perinatal psychiatry. The event is meant to be organized on the principle of active discussion of participants in the form of round tables.
