The European Center for Peace and Development UN University for Peace organizes this School with the aim to direct the focus to forensic and gender characteristics of the abuse of psychoactive substances and addictions, as well as to bring together experts from various fields - physicians, social workers, special pedagogues, psychologists, lawyers, and other professionals, who will enable a more extensive exchange of experience as well as provide the latest knowledge, practical and scientific achievements in the area of prevention, treatment and integral rehabilitation of addictive diseases.

Contemporary addictions are no longer manifested only as the risky use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances. In the era of postmodernism, they have reached epidemiological rates in the so-called non-chemical addictions (pathological gambling, dependence on video games, the Internet and social networks, shopping...). Unfortunately, this change has not led to a reduction in the the so-called chemical addictions. Research shows that not only are some of them increasing in number but an increase in mortality associated with addictions is registered. Likewise, social and psychological consequences to family members, social status of families, especially children are more pronounced. In relation to addictive diseases, there is significant growth of social deviation, domestic violence, general crime, prostitution, and human trafficking.

In this way, contemporary addictions represent globally the largest problem from the aspects of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Addictions to psychoactive substances, but non-chemical dependence, are primarily complex diseases of the central nervous system, but with specific behavioural characteristics. Therefore, these are behavioural disorders. Namely, all addictions have the characteristics of learned behaviour. However, their emergence, this process of emotional and social learning has a very complex neurobiochemical substrate. The disturbed, so-called addictive behavior is mostly manifested through disturbed relationships with the family and with the social environment, so it is necessary to perceive and treat it, being mindful of the particularities of the ecosystem networks in which therapeutic procedures are planned and implemented.

The work of the School will especially emphasize and elaborate a new paradigm for the recovery of addiction diseases, not just diagnostics and medical treatment. According to the postulate of the New Paradigm, the goal of addiction treatment is not only to stop or reduce the use of alcohol or any other drug. A formal episode of treatment by a medical model is relatively short. All episodes of treatment begin with the date of admission and end with the release date. Every episode of treatment defines the problem of addiction as an individual problem - the episode of treatment starts and helps the individual solution and supports the individual to move forward towards behavior change. Accordingly, the New Paradigm insists on the establishment of treatment and its realization, similar to the treatment of chronic diseases, supporting the long-term management of treatment of addictive disease. Recovery is a dynamic process of continuous development and work on the prevention of relapse, but also a spiritual awakening, including helping others, in particular helping the addicts to alcohol and other PAS. Apart from solidarity with a sick member of the community, changes in the family and social communities are also expected in relation to the causes and consequences of addictions.
